Reflection on a Reckless Journey

[Formerly Sonnet for Scooter]

Her long hair flies behind, lush red and gold,
like gems that glisten in the summer sun
of children’s paradise. Strong and bold,
her bravery drives the skateboard faster. Listen,
Her laughter rises up as father pleads,
warning my little sister to journey slow.
Her rendezvous complete, and board beneath
tan arms, she jumps the steps, stands and glows,
triumphant of her skillful, reckless cruise.
On the porch, she sets the skateboard down
by his empty can and kisses him. “Hey dude,
I like going fast.” She hugs his frown,
ignorant of the failures committed by this man
who gently tugs the hair beneath his hands.
